A practical FAQ on whether Star Wars Shatterpoint movement and range tools are worth buying, what the official pack includes, and when you can skip them.
Quick answer
If you already own the Star Wars: Shatterpoint Core set, you do not need extra movement and range tools to play your first games. Buy a dedicated pack when you regularly host multiple players, want a second set of measuring tools at the table, or are building a strike team from scratch and do not have the Core set's tools on hand.
What the official movement and range tools pack actually includes
The Star Wars Shatterpoint: Movement & Range Tools pack contains five range tools and two movement tools. These are the same types of measuring tools found in the Core set, sold as a supplement rather than a replacement. That matters because Shatterpoint uses custom measurement rather than a tape measure or generic ruler, so having the correct tools on hand keeps movement and range checks consistent between players.
When extra measuring tools are worth buying
The clearest case is a shared table. If two players are each moving squads and checking range during the same activation sequence, one set of tools gets passed back and forth constantly. A second pack lets both players measure without interrupting the other. The second case is a collection that has outgrown one Core set: if you keep multiple strike teams ready to play, keeping a dedicated set of Shatterpoint measuring tools with each force removes the scramble before a game. The third case is building from scratch. The catalog notes that this measuring tool pack plus a set of dice would be necessary for players building a strike team outside of a Core set, so it is a practical starting purchase rather than an optional upgrade in that situation.
When you can skip it
Skip it if you own one Core set and usually play one-on-one at home with the same opponent. The Core set already supplies the range and movement tools you need, and the extra pack duplicates those rather than adding new measurement types. It also will not fix a missing rulebook, dice, or models, so treat it as a convenience and expansion purchase, not a way to complete a collection that is missing core components. If your only concern is storage space, the tools are small and flat, so this is a low-risk add either way.
How this fits with other Shatterpoint accessories
Movement and range tools are the measuring layer of the game. If you are also expanding your forces, the Deploy the Garrison Squad Pack is a natural next step for Imperial players: it brings Director Krennic alongside Death Troopers and Shore Troopers, with long-range and support options that make accurate range measurement more relevant during play. If you are weighing a card game purchase instead, note that Weiss Schwarz: Revue Starlight: Re LIVE Booster Box is a sealed TCG product with its own ordering terms, including a 2.5% cancellation fee and combined shipping for mixed in-stock and pre-order orders, so it is a different kind of purchase from miniatures tools.
Shatterpoint tools FAQ
- Do I need Shatterpoint movement and range tools to play?
- No, if you own the Core set. The Core set already includes range and movement tools. Buy the separate pack only to add a second set or to build a strike team without a Core set. Core set owners can skip it; scratch builders should not.
- How many tools come in the pack?
- The pack contains five range tools and two movement tools. That is enough for one player to measure without borrowing from an opponent. One pack covers one player's measuring needs.
- Can I use a tape measure instead?
- Shatterpoint uses custom range and movement tools rather than a tape measure, and the official tools are designed for the game's measurement. Using substitutes can create disagreements about whether a move or shot is in range. Stick with the official tools for consistent games.
- Are these the same tools as the Core set?
- Yes. The catalog describes them as more of the range and movement tools found in the Core set, so they supplement rather than replace what you already have. Expect duplicates, not new tool types.
- What should I buy alongside them?
- If you are building from scratch, add a set of dice, since the catalog lists dice as necessary alongside the measuring tools. For Imperial players, the Deploy the Garrison Squad Pack adds long-range units that benefit from accurate measuring. Dice first, then a squad pack that matches your faction.
